Management
Program
At Mill Creek Ranch our cattle are bred not only to meet
our rigid requirements, but those of our customers in the
beef industry.
Registered Angus was specifically chosen for their ability
to excel under all conditions. Through artificial insemination,
we're able
to produce superior genetics with an emphasis on carcass traits.
All animals undergo individual evaluation to help identify
superior traits within our herd; these animals must pass tests
in performance,
carcass, fertility, milking ability and eye appeal. We feel
that keeping accurate records through AHIR (Angus Herd Improvement
Records),
evaluating our progress and constantly looking for ways to
add value to our herd and value for our customers is essential.
Our herds run on 1,000 acres of improved grassland, utilizing
cross fencing and rotational grazing. Herds are supplemented
protein
year around through Farmland Industries Range Tubs to enhance
forage utilization. Farmlands Pro-Phos Minerals are feed
free choice and
rotated seasonally to meet the needs of the herd. Cows are
vaccinated twice a year and are certified Brucellosis Free.
All calves are vaccinated 8 weeks. before weaning and then
again in 4 weeks. Calves are only supplemented under extreme
weather
conditions. We feel by doing this we are better able to evaluate
the cow's ability to wean a calf at a minimum of 50% of her
mature weight.
All heifers are developed on Farmlands Grow-Gest
program to ensure proper nutrition, growth and frame size by
breeding
age. All heifers
are artificially inseminated. This process at our ranch
begins with synchronizing them by feeding MGA for 14 days followed
by GnRH injection on the 26th day and on the 33rd day with
an injection
of PGF. Heifers will remain together and calve in a pasture
close to the barn and separate from the main herd until
their
2nd calf
is born.
